“Explore Rydal Water and Grasmere Loop: a scenic, moderately challenging 11 km hike rich in nature and history.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Rydal Water and Grasmere Loop is an 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 300 meters (about 984 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, aim for the nearest significant landmark, which is the village of Rydal. There is parking available near Rydal Mount, the historic home of poet William Wordsworth. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Windermere. From Windermere, you can take a bus to Rydal, which is well-connected by local bus services.
The trail begins near Rydal Mount and quickly immerses you in the serene beauty of the Lake District. The initial section takes you along the shores of Rydal Water, a small but picturesque lake. The path here is relatively flat, making for an easy start. Keep an eye out for the abundant birdlife, including herons and kingfishers, which are often seen around the lake.
As you continue, you'll pass by Rydal Cave, an old slate quarry that offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's industrial past. The cave is a popular spot for a short break and some exploration. Further along, the trail takes you through the grounds of Rydal Hall, a historic estate with beautifully landscaped gardens and waterfalls.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach the village of Grasmere. This charming village is closely associated with William Wordsworth, who lived here for many years. Dove Cottage, Wordsworth's former home, is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Grasmere is also famous for its gingerbread, so a stop at the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop is highly recommended.
Leaving Grasmere, the trail begins to ascend towards Loughrigg Terrace. This section involves a moderate climb but rewards you with stunning panoramic views of Grasmere and Rydal Water. The elevation gain here is about 150 meters (492 feet) over a distance of 2 km (1.2 miles). The terrace is a perfect spot for a rest and some photography.
The final leg of the loop descends back towards Rydal, passing through lush woodlands and open fields. The descent is gradual, making for a pleasant end to the hike. As you approach the trailhead, you'll once again be treated to views of Rydal Water, completing the loop.
For navigation, it's advisable to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool ensures you stay on track. Always check the weather forecast before setting out, as conditions in the Lake District can change rapidly.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna. The woodlands are home to red squirrels, and in the spring, the area is carpeted with bluebells. The lakes themselves are teeming with fish and waterfowl, making this trail a delight for nature enthusiasts.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-do for hikers visiting the Lake District.
