The trail begins in Hartsop, a charming village known for its traditional stone cottages and scenic surroundings. As you start your hike, you'll follow a well-marked path that gradually ascends through lush meadows and pastures. The initial section of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up before the more challenging climbs ahead.
After approximately 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll begin the ascent to Rest Dodd. The climb is steep in places, but the path is well-trodden and easy to follow. As you gain elevation, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding fells and valleys. Keep an eye out for red deer, which are often spotted in this area. The summit of Rest Dodd, at 696 meters (2,283 feet), offers panoramic views that are well worth the effort.
From Rest Dodd, the trail descends slightly before climbing again to The Nab, which stands at 576 meters (1,890 feet). This section of the trail can be boggy, especially after heavy rain, so waterproof boots are recommended. The Nab is known for its distinctive flat top and offers excellent views of Martindale and the surrounding fells. This area is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique flora and fauna.
The region around Hartsop has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. The village itself has historical significance, with several buildings dating back to the 17th century. The area was also known for its lead mining industry in the 19th century, and you may come across remnants of old mine workings during your hike.
After enjoying the views from The Nab, the trail descends back towards Hartsop. This section of the trail is less steep but can be slippery, especially in wet conditions. The path winds through picturesque valleys and alongside babbling streams, providing a peaceful end to your hike. As you approach Hartsop, you'll pass through ancient woodlands, home to a variety of bird species and other wildlife.
Given the elevation changes and potential for boggy conditions, it's essential to be well-prepared. Use the HiiKER app for accurate navigation and to stay on track. Ensure you have appropriate clothing, footwear, and sufficient water and snacks. Weather in the Lake District can change rapidly, so be prepared for all conditions.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and historical interest, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
