To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, the town of Kendal. For those using public transport, Kendal is well-connected by train and bus services. From Kendal, you can take a local bus or taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent towards Podnet Tarn, a serene body of water surrounded by lush greenery. This section is relatively easy, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead. The tarn is a great spot for birdwatching, with species like herons and kingfishers often spotted here.
As you continue, you'll reach The Glebe, an open area that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This section involves a moderate climb, gaining about 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation over 3 km (1.86 miles). The Glebe is historically significant, as it was once common land used by local villagers for grazing livestock. Today, it serves as a picturesque picnic spot.
The trail then descends into Black Beck Wood, a dense forest area rich in flora and fauna. This part of the trail is more challenging due to its uneven terrain and occasional muddy patches, especially after rain. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for ancient oak and beech trees, some of which are over 200 years old.
Given the varied terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be invaluable, especially in the forested sections where paths can be less distinct.
The region around Westmorland and Furness is steeped in history. The trail passes near several old farmsteads and stone walls that date back to the medieval period. These remnants offer a glimpse into the area's agricultural past. Additionally, the trail skirts the edge of a Roman road, a testament to the area's long history of human settlement.
The entire loop takes about 6-8 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make. There are no facilities along the trail, so be sure to carry enough water and snacks.
