“Explore lush woodlands, historic Sizergh Castle, and diverse wildlife on this accessible 3 km countryside loop.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness in England, the National Trust - Sizergh and Chapel Wood Loop is a delightful 3 km (approximately 1.9 miles) loop trail with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. The trail is rated as medium difficulty, primarily due to some uneven terrain and potentially muddy sections after rain.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Sizergh Castle, which is well-signposted from the A590. There is ample parking available at the castle. If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is Oxenholme Lake District, from where you can take a taxi or a local bus to Sizergh Castle.
The trail begins at the car park of Sizergh Castle, a stunning medieval house with rich history and beautiful gardens. As you set off, you’ll immediately be immersed in the lush greenery of the surrounding countryside.
Sizergh Castle itself is a significant landmark, dating back to the 14th century. It has been the home of the Strickland family for over 750 years. The castle's gardens are particularly noteworthy, featuring a limestone rock garden, a pond, and a variety of rare and exotic plants.
About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you’ll enter Chapel Wood, a serene woodland area that offers a peaceful retreat from the more open sections of the trail. The wood is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, badgers, and numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for the ancient trees, some of which are hundreds of years old.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Depending on the season, you might see bluebells carpeting the forest floor in spring or a variety of fungi in autumn. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting species such as woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even the occasional owl.
The trail is well-marked with National Trust signs, but it’s always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain is mostly flat with some gentle undulations, and the path can be narrow and muddy in places, so sturdy walking boots are recommended.
As you loop back towards Sizergh Castle, you’ll pass through open fields and meadows, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see the distant fells of the Lake District.
The area around Sizergh has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. The castle itself has played a significant role in local history, particularly during the English Civil War when it was a Royalist stronghold.
The final stretch of the trail brings you back to the starting point at Sizergh Castle, where you can take some time to explore the castle and its gardens if you haven’t already. There’s also a café on-site, perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and peaceful woodland, making it a rewarding hike for those looking to explore the English countryside.
