“Discover natural beauty, history, and diverse wildlife on the rewarding Little Langdale Circular Path.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Little Langdale Circular Path via Colwith Force is an 8 km (5 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 300 meters (984 feet). This medium-difficulty hike offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Little Langdale, where limited parking is available near the Three Shires Inn. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Ambleside, which is well-connected by bus services. From Ambleside, take a local bus towards Little Langdale, and alight near the Three Shires Inn.
The trail begins near the Three Shires Inn, a historic pub that has been serving travelers since the 19th century. From here, the path meanders through picturesque countryside, offering stunning views of the surrounding fells and valleys.
Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter Colwith Force, a beautiful waterfall cascading down a series of rocky steps. The waterfall is particularly impressive after heavy rain, and the surrounding woodland is home to a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. Take a moment to enjoy the serene atmosphere and perhaps capture some photographs.
Continuing along the trail, you'll reach Little Langdale Tarn around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark. This tranquil lake is a great spot for a short break. The tarn is surrounded by lush greenery and offers a habitat for various aquatic birds and insects. Keep an eye out for dragonflies skimming the water's surface.
As you hike, you'll pass by several sites of historical interest. The area around Little Langdale has a rich history of slate quarrying, and remnants of old quarries and workers' cottages can still be seen. The trail also takes you near Cathedral Cave, a large man-made cavern created by slate mining. The cave is accessible via a short detour and is worth exploring for its impressive interior and echoing acoustics.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The terrain can be uneven and slippery, especially near the waterfall and tarn, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Additionally, weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so pack waterproof clothing and check the forecast before setting out.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna. The woodlands are home to red squirrels, a species that has become increasingly rare in the UK. In the spring and summer months, the trail is adorned with wildflowers, including bluebells and foxgloves, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
The final section of the trail loops back towards Little Langdale, offering more scenic views of the valley and surrounding hills. As you approach the end of the hike, you'll pass through fields and pastures, often dotted with grazing sheep. The trail concludes back at the Three Shires Inn, where you can relax and enjoy a well-deserved meal or drink.
This hike offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and wildlife, making it a must-do for anyone visiting the Lake District.
