Loop
“A tapestry of wild moorland, historic stone walls, and sweeping Lake District vistas awaits your steps.”
Starting from the picturesque village of Coniston, this loop hike covers approximately 22 km (13.7 miles) with an elevation gain of about 600 metres (1,970 feet), offering a rewarding journey through the heart of the Lake District’s southern fells. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Coniston village centre, making it accessible for those arriving by car or public transport. Regular buses run from Windermere and Ambleside to Coniston, and there is ample parking available in the village for drivers.Initial Ascent and Little FellLeaving Coniston, the route heads north, quickly gaining height as you ascend through mixed woodland and open fellside. Early on, you’ll pass through the historic Monk Coniston estate, once owned by Beatrix Potter, whose conservation efforts helped preserve much of the surrounding landscape. The climb to Little Fell is steady, with panoramic views opening up over Coniston Water and the surrounding hills. At roughly 4 km (2.5 miles) in, you’ll reach the open moorland, where the terrain becomes more rugged and exposed.Raven Crag and Moorland TraverseThe path continues towards Raven Crag, a prominent rocky outcrop that offers a dramatic vantage point over the Yewdale Fells and the distant Langdale Pikes. This section, around 8 km (5 miles) into the hike, is a highlight for those interested in geology, as the crags are composed of ancient volcanic rocks typical of the Lake District. The moorland here is home to red grouse, skylarks, and, if you’re lucky, you might spot a herd of native fell ponies grazing among the heather.Monk Coniston Moor and ReturnCrossing Monk Coniston Moor, the landscape becomes wilder, with sweeping views across the high ground. The moor is dotted with remnants of old boundary stones and dry-stone walls, a testament to centuries of sheep farming. In spring and summer, the area bursts into colour with wildflowers and the calls of curlews and lapwings. At about 15 km (9.3 miles), the route begins to descend, following ancient packhorse trails that wind through bracken and birch woods.Navigation and SafetyThe trail is well-defined in most sections, but the moorland can be boggy and indistinct in poor weather. Carry a map and compass, and use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and route tracking. Weather in the Lake District can change rapidly, so pack waterproofs and extra layers, and be prepared for limited visibility on the higher ground.Historical and Natural HighlightsThis loop passes through landscapes shaped by centuries of human activity, from the medieval monks who once farmed these hills to the Victorian-era slate quarries visible near the route. The area’s rich biodiversity includes roe deer, buzzards, and a variety of wildflowers, making it a rewarding destination for nature lovers.Getting ThereTo reach the start, take the bus from Windermere or Ambleside to Coniston, alighting at the main stop near the village centre. For drivers, the Coniston village car park is the most convenient option, located just a short walk from the trailhead. Facilities in Coniston include cafés, shops, and public toilets, making it easy to stock up before setting out. This loop offers a classic Lake District experience, combining sweeping views, varied terrain, and a sense of history that lingers in every stone wall and windswept crag.
