“Explore lush woodlands, stunning waterfalls, and panoramic views on this historic, moderate 13 km Lake District loop.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness in England, this 13 km (8 miles) loop trail offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet). The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available near Aira Force, a well-known waterfall in the Lake District. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is Penrith, from where you can take a bus to the Aira Force car park.
The hike begins with a gentle ascent through lush woodland, leading you to the stunning Aira Force waterfall. This 65-foot (20-meter) waterfall is one of the most popular attractions in the Lake District, and for good reason. The sound of cascading water and the surrounding greenery make it a perfect spot for a brief rest and some photography. The area around Aira Force is rich in flora, including ancient oak, ash, and yew trees.
Continuing the ascent, the trail takes you up to Kieksty Brow. This section is more strenuous, with a steady climb that rewards you with panoramic views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. The terrain here is a mix of rocky paths and grassy slopes, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and various bird species, including buzzards and kestrels, which are commonly seen in this area.
As you descend from Kieksty Brow, you will approach High Force Fall. This waterfall, though less famous than Aira Force, is equally captivating. The trail here is less crowded, offering a more serene experience. The surrounding area is dotted with wildflowers in the spring and summer, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
The region around this trail is steeped in history. The Lake District has been a source of inspiration for poets like William Wordsworth, who often wrote about its natural beauty. The area also has a rich industrial history, with remnants of old mining operations visible along the trail. These historical elements add an extra layer of interest to your hike.
Given the varied terrain and elevation changes, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so pack layers and waterproof gear. The trail is well-marked, but some sections can be slippery, especially after rain, so take care when descending.
The trail offers ample opportunities to observe local wildlife. In addition to red squirrels and birds of prey, you might spot deer and various smaller mammals. The flora is equally diverse, with seasonal changes bringing different plants into bloom. In autumn, the woodland areas are particularly beautiful with vibrant fall colors.
The loop eventually brings you back to the starting point near Aira Force. This final section is relatively easy, allowing you to cool down as you make your way back. If you have time, consider visiting the nearby Ullswater Steamers for a scenic boat ride on the lake.
This trail offers a mix of natural beauty, historical interest, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
