“Embark on an 18 km scenic loop with breathtaking views, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife.”
Starting your hike near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Heron Pike, Fairfield, and Hart Crag Loop via Ambleside is an 18 km (approximately 11 miles) loop with an elevation gain of around 1000 meters (3280 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of stunning landscapes, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Ambleside, a charming town in the Lake District. If you're using public transport, take a train to Windermere and then a bus to Ambleside. The trailhead is conveniently located near the town center, making it accessible for both drivers and public transport users.
The loop begins with a gradual ascent towards Heron Pike. The initial section is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up as you traverse through lush meadows and woodlands. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red squirrels and various bird species.
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Heron Pike. The elevation gain here is around 400 meters (1312 feet). The summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding fells and lakes, making it a perfect spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing from Heron Pike, the trail becomes steeper as you approach Fairfield, the highest point of the loop at 873 meters (2864 feet). This section is about 3 km (1.9 miles) long with an elevation gain of 300 meters (984 feet). The summit of Fairfield provides breathtaking 360-degree views, including vistas of Helvellyn and the distant Pennines. This area is also rich in history, with ancient cairns marking the summit, believed to be remnants of early human activity.
From Fairfield, the trail descends slightly before climbing again to Hart Crag, located about 2 km (1.2 miles) away. The elevation gain here is more moderate, around 150 meters (492 feet). Hart Crag offers equally stunning views and is a great spot to observe the rugged terrain of the Lake District.
The descent from Hart Crag takes you through rocky paths and grassy slopes, eventually leading back to Ambleside. This section is approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) long and involves a descent of around 550 meters (1804 feet). The path can be slippery, especially after rain, so take care and consider using trekking poles for stability.
