“Embark on an 11 km adventure through stunning landscapes, historic sites, and diverse wildlife to Helvellyn Peak.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Helvellyn Peak from Dunmall Raise trail is an 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of around 800 meters (about 2,625 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a mix of stunning landscapes, historical significance, and diverse wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, the Dunmail Raise, which is easily accessible via the A591 road. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Keswick, from where you can catch a bus to Dunmail Raise. The bus services are frequent, especially during the summer months, making it convenient for hikers without a car.
The trail begins at Dunmail Raise, a historic mountain pass with a rich history dating back to the 10th century. Legend has it that this was the site of a battle between the Saxons and the last King of Cumbria, Dunmail. As you start your ascent, you'll be greeted by lush greenery and the sound of cascading streams.
Initial Ascent (0-2 km / 0-1.2 miles): The first section of the trail is a steady climb through grassy slopes and rocky paths. You'll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation. Keep an eye out for Herdwick sheep, a breed native to the Lake District.
Grisedale Tarn (2-4 km / 1.2-2.5 miles): As you continue, you'll reach Grisedale Tarn, a serene mountain lake nestled between the peaks. This is a great spot for a short break. The tarn is also steeped in legend, believed to be the resting place of the crown of Dunmail.
Striding Edge (4-6 km / 2.5-3.7 miles): One of the most exhilarating parts of the hike is crossing Striding Edge, a narrow ridge that requires careful navigation. The views from here are breathtaking, but it's essential to be cautious, especially in wet or windy conditions. Use HiiKER to ensure you stay on the correct path.
Helvellyn Summit (6 km / 3.7 miles): The final push to the summit involves a steep climb, but the effort is well worth it. At 950 meters (3,117 feet), Helvellyn is the third-highest peak in England. On a clear day, you can see as far as Scotland and the Isle of Man. The summit is marked by a stone cairn and offers panoramic views of the surrounding fells and lakes.
The trail is home to a variety of wildlife, including red deer, peregrine falcons, and the rare mountain ringlet butterfly. The flora is equally diverse, with heather, bilberry, and various alpine plants adding splashes of color to the landscape.
The return journey follows the same path, allowing you to enjoy the views from a different perspective. Be mindful of your footing, especially when descending Striding Edge.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and physical challenge, making it a must-do for any avid hiker.
