“Embark on the Grizedale Tarn Walk for a scenic 8 km adventure through England's Lake District.”
Starting near the picturesque region of Westmorland and Furness in England, the Grizedale Tarn Walk offers an invigorating 8 km (approximately 5 miles) out-and-back journey with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and historical richness of the Lake District.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Grasmere, which is well-signposted from major roads in the Lake District. Parking is available near the trailhead. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is Grasmere, which is accessible by bus from larger towns such as Ambleside and Keswick. From Grasmere, it's a short walk to the start of the trail.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush woodlands, where you can expect to see a variety of native flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and a plethora of bird species, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail are relatively easy, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.
As you continue, you'll come across the remnants of old stone walls and farmsteads, hinting at the area's agricultural past. Around the 3 km (1.8 miles) mark, the trail opens up to reveal stunning views of the surrounding fells. This is a great spot to take a break and soak in the scenery.
The highlight of the trail is undoubtedly Grizedale Tarn, located approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) from the start. Nestled between the peaks of Fairfield and Dollywaggon Pike, the tarn is a serene body of water that offers a perfect spot for a picnic. The tarn itself has historical significance, as it is believed to have been a resting place for monks traveling between monasteries in the medieval period.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time updates. The weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes and carry appropriate gear, including waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking boots.
After enjoying the tranquility of Grizedale Tarn, retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The descent offers a different perspective of the landscape, with opportunities to spot wildlife you may have missed on the way up.
Ensure you carry enough water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail. The entire hike can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace and how long you spend at the tarn. Always follow the Leave No Trace principles to keep this beautiful area pristine for future hikers.
