The trail begins near Glenridding, where you will start your ascent towards Glenridding Dodd. The initial part of the hike is steep, gaining elevation quickly. As you climb, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. Glenridding Dodd stands at 442 meters (1,450 feet) and offers a perfect spot for a short break to take in the panoramic vistas.
Continuing from Glenridding Dodd, the trail leads you towards Heron Pike. This section is less steep but still requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions. Heron Pike, at 612 meters (2,008 feet), provides a more expansive view of the Lake District, including the Helvellyn range. The terrain here is a mix of grassy slopes and rocky outcrops, so be prepared for varied footing.
The final major ascent takes you to Sheffield Pike, which stands at 675 meters (2,215 feet). This part of the trail is more rugged, with rocky paths and occasional scree. Sheffield Pike offers some of the best views of the hike, including a clear sight of Ullswater and the surrounding peaks. The summit is marked by a cairn, and it's a great place to pause and enjoy the scenery.
From Sheffield Pike, the trail descends back towards Glenridding. The descent can be steep in places, so take your time and use trekking poles if you have them. The path winds through a mix of heather and bracken, and you may spot wildlife such as red deer and various bird species. The final stretch of the trail brings you back to Glenridding, completing the loop.
