“Embark on a mesmerizing adventure through the Lake District's breathtaking landscapes, steeped in history and natural beauty.”
Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, the Dollywaggon Pike, Nethermost Pike, and Helvellyn Loop offers a captivating journey through some of England's most stunning landscapes. This 20 km (approximately 12.4 miles) loop trail, with an elevation gain of around 1000 meters (3280 feet), begins near the charming village of Glenridding in Westmorland and Furness. The trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, travelers can drive to Glenridding, where parking is available. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Penrith, approximately 13 miles (21 km) away. From Penrith, regular bus services run to Glenridding, providing a convenient option for those without a car.
Starting from Glenridding, the trail initially follows a gentle path along the shores of Ullswater, one of the Lake District's most picturesque lakes. As you begin your ascent, the path becomes steeper, leading you through lush green valleys and past cascading streams. The first major landmark is Dollywaggon Pike, standing at 858 meters (2815 feet). The views from here are breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding fells and valleys.
Continuing along the ridge, you'll reach Nethermost Pike, slightly lower at 891 meters (2923 feet). The terrain here is rugged, with rocky outcrops and narrow paths that require careful navigation. Using the HiiKER app can be particularly helpful in ensuring you stay on track.
The highlight of the loop is undoubtedly Helvellyn, the third highest peak in England at 950 meters (3117 feet). The summit offers sweeping views across the Lake District, with the iconic Striding Edge ridge visible to the east. This area is rich in history, with Helvellyn being a favorite among poets and artists, including the famous Romantic poet William Wordsworth.
The descent from Helvellyn takes you past Red Tarn, a glacial lake nestled in a dramatic corrie. The path here can be steep and rocky, so sturdy footwear is essential. As you make your way back towards Glenridding, the trail meanders through ancient woodlands and open moorland, providing opportunities to spot local wildlife such as red deer and peregrine falcons.
The Lake District is steeped in history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic period. The area around Helvellyn has been a popular destination for walkers since the 18th century, and its rugged beauty has inspired countless works of art and literature.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, challenging terrain, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast exploring the Lake District.
