“The Dixon Heights Tower Loop offers a scenic 3 km hike with historical landmarks and diverse wildlife.”
Starting near the charming village of Westmorland and Furness in England, the Dixon Heights Tower Loop is a delightful 3 km (approximately 1.86 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to enjoy a mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the vicinity of Westmorland and Furness. There is a small parking area near the village where you can leave your car. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the Westmorland and Furness railway station. From there, it's a short walk to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a mixed woodland area, where you can expect to see a variety of native trees such as oak, ash, and beech. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red squirrels and a variety of bird species like woodpeckers and robins. The initial 0.5 km (0.31 miles) is relatively easy, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.
As you continue, you'll come across the first significant landmark, an old stone bridge that dates back to the 18th century. This bridge is a great spot for a quick rest and some photos. After crossing the bridge, the trail starts to climb more steeply. Over the next 1 km (0.62 miles), you'll gain most of the elevation, so take your time and enjoy the increasingly panoramic views.
At approximately the 1.5 km (0.93 miles) mark, you'll reach the Dixon Heights Tower. This historical tower was built in the early 19th century and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Lake District to the north and the Pennines to the east. The tower itself is a fascinating piece of history, originally constructed as a lookout point during the Napoleonic Wars.
After spending some time at the tower, the trail loops back down through a different section of woodland. This part of the trail is less steep but can be a bit rocky, so watch your footing. The descent offers more opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the serene environment. You'll pass through a meadow area around the 2.5 km (1.55 miles) mark, which is often filled with wildflowers in the spring and summer months.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your experience and ensure you stay on track.
The final stretch of the trail brings you back to the starting point near Westmorland and Furness. This loop trail is a wonderful way to spend a few hours, offering a mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, the Dixon Heights Tower Loop has something to offer.
