Starting your hike near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Common Fell, Hart Side, Watson's Dodd, and Great Dodd Loop offers a rewarding 17 km (approximately 10.5 miles) journey with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (about 1,970 feet). This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness and some experience in hill walking.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Dockray, a small village near Ullswater. The nearest significant landmark is the Dockray and Matterdale End Post Office, where you can find parking options. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Penrith, which is well-connected by train. From Penrith, you can take a bus to Dockray, with services running regularly.
The trail begins near Dockray, and you'll start your ascent towards Common Fell. The initial part of the hike is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up as you traverse through lush meadows and past small streams. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red squirrels and various bird species.
After approximately 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll reach the summit of Common Fell. The elevation gain here is gradual, making it a pleasant start. From Common Fell, the trail continues towards Hart Side. This section is about 4 km (2.5 miles) and involves a steeper climb, gaining around 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation. The views from Hart Side are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding fells and valleys.
Next, you'll head towards Watson's Dodd, which is roughly 3 km (1.9 miles) from Hart Side. This part of the trail is less steep but still offers a good workout. The terrain here is more rugged, with rocky paths and occasional boggy sections. Watson's Dodd provides another excellent viewpoint, especially on clear days.
From Watson's Dodd, the trail leads you to Great Dodd, the highest point on this loop. The distance between these two peaks is about 2 km (1.2 miles), with an elevation gain of approximately 150 meters (492 feet). Great Dodd stands at 857 meters (2,812 feet) and offers breathtaking views of the Lake District, including Helvellyn and Skiddaw.
The descent begins from Great Dodd, taking you back towards Dockray. This section is around 5 km (3.1 miles) and can be quite steep in places, so take care, especially if the ground is wet. The path winds through grassy slopes and eventually re-enters the woodland areas near Dockray.
The region around this trail is steeped in history. The Lake District has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and you may come across ancient stone circles and remnants of old settlements. The area was also a favorite of the famous poet William Wordsworth, who drew inspiration from its natural beauty.
