Out and Back
“Experience the Lake District's scenic beauty and ancient history on this challenging 6 km round-trip hike.”
Starting near the picturesque region of Westmorland and Furness in England, this 6 km (approximately 3.7 miles) out-and-back trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue. With an elevation gain of around 400 meters (about 1,312 feet), this medium-difficulty hike is perfect for those looking to challenge themselves while soaking in the stunning landscapes of the Lake District.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Mungrisdale, which is the nearest significant landmark. There is limited parking available near the trailhead, so arriving early is advisable. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Penrith, from where you can take a local bus or taxi to Mungrisdale.
The hike begins with a gentle ascent through lush green fields and pastures, offering a serene start to your journey. As you progress, the terrain becomes more rugged, with rocky paths and steeper inclines. The first significant landmark you'll encounter is Carrock Fell, a prominent hill with a summit that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The climb to Carrock Fell is approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) from the trailhead, with an elevation gain of about 200 meters (656 feet).
Carrock Fell is not just a natural wonder but also a site of historical importance. The summit is home to the remains of an ancient hill fort, believed to date back to the Iron Age. This fort offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's past, and the views from here are nothing short of spectacular.
As you continue your hike towards Round Knott, you'll traverse through heather-clad moorlands, which are home to a variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for red grouse, skylarks, and occasionally, the elusive mountain hare. The flora is equally captivating, with vibrant heather and bilberry bushes adding splashes of color to the landscape.
The path from Round Knott to Miton Hill is less trodden, offering a more secluded experience. This section is approximately 1.5 km (0.9 miles) with a moderate elevation gain. The terrain here is a mix of grassy paths and rocky outcrops, requiring careful navigation. Using HiiKER can be particularly useful in this section to ensure you stay on track.
The final ascent to Miton Hill is a rewarding climb, offering sweeping views of the Northern Fells. Once you've taken in the vistas, retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The descent offers a different perspective of the landscape, making the return journey equally enjoyable.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and a moderate physical challenge, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting the Lake District.
