Loop
“A picturesque 16-kilometer Lake District loop with challenging ascents, stunning views, and rich historical significance.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Westmorland and Furness, England, this loop trail spans approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) with an elevation gain of around 900 meters (2,950 feet). The trailhead is conveniently accessible by car, with parking available near the village. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Ambleside, from where you can catch a local bus to the trailhead.
The hike begins with a steady ascent through lush, green pastures and ancient stone walls, typical of the Lake District's charming countryside. After about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), you will reach Calf Crag. This section offers a moderate climb and provides your first panoramic views of the surrounding fells and valleys. The terrain here is a mix of grassy paths and rocky outcrops, so sturdy footwear is essential.
Continuing from Calf Crag, the trail leads you towards High Raise, the highest point of the hike at 762 meters (2,500 feet). This section is approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from Calf Crag and involves a more challenging ascent. The summit of High Raise offers breathtaking 360-degree views, including vistas of the Langdale Pikes and the distant peaks of the Helvellyn range. This is a perfect spot for a rest and some photography.
From High Raise, the trail descends slightly before climbing again towards Sergeant Man, about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away. The path here is rocky and can be slippery, especially after rain, so take care. Sergeant Man is a distinctive rocky outcrop that provides another excellent viewpoint. The surrounding area is rich in heather and bilberry, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
The next section takes you towards Tarn Crag, approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from Sergeant Man. This part of the trail is less steep but involves navigating through some boggy areas, so waterproof boots are advisable. Tarn Crag offers views over Easedale Tarn, a serene mountain lake that is a popular spot for a picnic.
The final leg of the loop brings you back towards High Broadrayne, covering the last 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). The descent is gradual, passing through scenic woodlands and open fields. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red squirrels and various bird species. The trail eventually leads you back to the starting point near Westmorland and Furness.
The Lake District has a rich history, and this trail is no exception. The area around High Raise and Sergeant Man has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with ancient stone circles and burial mounds scattered throughout the region. The landscape has inspired countless poets and writers, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, whose works capture the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.
