Starting near Westmorland and Furness in England, the Brougham Loop is a delightful 5 km (approximately 3.1 miles) trail with no significant elevation gain, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the historic Brougham Castle, a significant landmark that dates back to the early 13th century. This castle, built by Robert de Vieuxpont, offers a glimpse into medieval architecture and history, setting a fascinating tone for your hike.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If you're driving, set your GPS to Brougham Castle, Penrith, CA10 2AA. There is ample parking available near the castle. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Penrith North Lakes, which is well-connected to major cities like Manchester and Glasgow. From the station, you can take a local bus or taxi to Brougham Castle, which is about 3 miles (4.8 km) away.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The loop is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool will enhance your experience and ensure you stay on track.
As you begin your hike, you'll immediately notice the lush greenery and the serene River Eamont, which runs parallel to parts of the trail. The river is home to various species of fish and birds, making it a great spot for nature enthusiasts. About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the Brougham Hall, often referred to as the "Windsor of the North." This historic hall, dating back to the 14th century, is partially restored and offers a unique glimpse into the region's aristocratic past.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Expect to see a variety of trees, including oak, ash, and beech. During spring and summer, the path is adorned with wildflowers like bluebells and primroses. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red squirrels, deer, and a variety of bird species including kingfishers and herons.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll encounter the Countess Pillar, a historic monument erected in 1656 by Lady Anne Clifford in memory of her mother. This pillar is not only a significant historical landmark but also offers a picturesque spot for a short break.
As you near the end of the loop, you'll pass through open meadows and farmland, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The trail then circles back to Brougham Castle, where you can take some time to explore the castle grounds and perhaps enjoy a picnic by the river.
