This loop, considered to have a medium difficulty rating, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for avid walkers.

Getting to the Trailhead

The adventure begins near Westmorland and Furness, England. For those arriving by car, the trailhead is accessible via the B5343, with parking available at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, a well-known landmark in the area. Public transport users can catch a bus to the same location, which is a popular starting point for many walks in the Lake District.

The Journey Through the Fells

As you set out from the trailhead, the path ascends steadily towards the imposing Bowfell, one of the highest and most celebrated fells in the region. The ascent offers a mix of rocky paths and grassy slopes, with the Langdale Pikes providing a dramatic backdrop. Upon reaching the summit of Bowfell, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Continuing on, the trail leads to Esk Pike, where the landscape becomes more rugged. Here, hikers can marvel at the Scafell range to the west and the Helvellyn range to the east, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.

Landmarks and Natural Beauty

The route then takes you towards Allen Crags, where the terrain is characterized by its rocky outcrops and small tarns. The area is rich in wildlife, with a chance to spot native birds such as the peregrine falcon and the ring ouzel.

Descending from Allen Crags, the path meanders towards Rossett Pike. This section of the trail is known for its historical significance, with ancient packhorse routes still visible, hinting at the region's past as a bustling trade route.

Flora and Fauna

Throughout the hike, the diverse flora includes a variety of ferns, mosses, and wildflowers, which are particularly vibrant during the spring and summer months. The region is also home to the rare Herdwick sheep, which can often be seen grazing on the fells.

Navigation and Preparation

Hikers are advised to use the HiiKER app for navigation, as it provides detailed maps and trail information that can be invaluable in the often complex network of paths in the Lake District. Additionally, due to the changeable weather conditions, it's essential to carry waterproof clothing, a map and compass, and sufficient food and water.
