Starting near Westmorland and Furness, England, the Blencathra and Threlkeld Country Park Loop is a captivating 14 km (8.7 miles) trail with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 meters (3280 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness and some experience in hill walking.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Threlkeld, which is well-signposted from the A66 road. There is a car park near the village where you can leave your vehicle. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Penrith, from which you can take a bus to Threlkeld. The bus service is relatively frequent, but it's advisable to check the latest schedules.
The trail begins near Threlkeld, a charming village with a rich history dating back to the medieval period. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the lush greenery of Threlkeld Country Park. The initial section is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up before the more challenging ascents.
The first major landmark is the ascent to Blencathra, also known as Saddleback. This mountain is one of the most famous in the Lake District and offers stunning panoramic views. The climb is steep and rocky in parts, so sturdy hiking boots are essential. As you ascend, you'll gain approximately 600 meters (1968 feet) in elevation over a distance of about 4 km (2.5 miles). The path is well-trodden but can be slippery in wet conditions, so take care.
Upon reaching the summit of Blencathra, at an elevation of 868 meters (2848 feet), you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding fells and valleys. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Scottish Borders and the Isle of Man. This is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy a packed lunch while soaking in the scenery.
The descent from Blencathra takes you towards Threlkeld Quarry, a site of historical significance. The quarry was once a bustling hub of activity, providing slate and stone for various construction projects. Today, it serves as a fascinating reminder of the region's industrial past. The path here is less steep but still requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions.
As you continue your loop, you'll traverse through diverse habitats, including heathland, woodland, and open moorland. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red squirrels, deer, and a variety of bird species, including peregrine falcons and buzzards. The flora is equally diverse, with seasonal wildflowers adding splashes of color to the landscape.
The final section of the trail brings you back to Threlkeld Country Park. This part of the hike is relatively flat and offers a gentle cooldown after the more strenuous sections. The park itself is a haven for nature lovers, with well-maintained paths and plenty of spots to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. Ensure you have adequate water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. The weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and physical challenge, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting the Lake District.
