“The Blencathra and Scales Tarn Loop offers stunning views, challenging ascents, and rich historical significance.”
Starting near Westmorland and Furness in England, the Blencathra and Scales Tarn Loop is an 8 km (5 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 700 meters (2,300 feet). This medium-difficulty hike offers a mix of challenging ascents, breathtaking views, and historical significance.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Threlkeld, which is the nearest significant landmark. There is parking available near the village. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Penrith, from where you can take a bus to Threlkeld.
The trail begins with a gradual ascent from Threlkeld, leading you through lush green fields and past traditional stone walls. As you climb, you'll encounter a mix of grassy paths and rocky sections. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively gentle, gaining about 200 meters (650 feet) in elevation.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll reach Scales Tarn, a serene mountain lake nestled in a glacial corrie. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. The tarn is home to various bird species, so keep an eye out for red grouse and peregrine falcons.
From Scales Tarn, the trail becomes steeper as you ascend towards Blencathra's summit. This section is about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) long and gains approximately 300 meters (980 feet) in elevation. The path can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. As you climb, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Lake District, including Derwentwater and the surrounding fells.
Reaching the summit of Blencathra, also known as Saddleback, you'll find a trig point marking the highest point at 868 meters (2,848 feet). The views from here are spectacular, offering a 360-degree panorama of the Lake District. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Scottish Borders.
The descent begins with a steep drop down Hallsfell Ridge, which requires careful footing. This section is about 2 km (1.2 miles) long and descends approximately 400 meters (1,300 feet). The ridge is narrow in places, so take your time and use trekking poles if needed.
The final stretch of the loop takes you through grassy meadows and past ancient stone walls, gradually descending back to Threlkeld. This section is about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) and is relatively easy, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery.
Blencathra has a rich history, with its name derived from the Old Norse "Blenk-Kathra," meaning "bare hill." The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and you may come across ancient cairns and stone circles along the way. The mountain has also inspired numerous writers and poets, including Alfred Wainwright, who described it as one of the grandest objects in Lakeland.
