“Starting in Glenridding, the Birkhouse Moor Loop is a stunning 11 km trail showcasing Lake District beauty.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Glenridding in Westmorland and Furness, England, the Birkhouse Moor Loop is a captivating 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (about 1,970 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to experience the beauty of the Lake District without tackling the more strenuous peaks.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Glenridding, where parking is available at the Glenridding Car Park. For those using public transport, the nearest major town is Penrith, which is well-connected by train. From Penrith, you can take a bus (Stagecoach service 508) directly to Glenridding. The bus stop is conveniently located near the trailhead, making it easy to start your hike.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush woodlands, where you’ll be greeted by the soothing sounds of Glenridding Beck. As you climb higher, the trees give way to open moorland, offering expansive views of the surrounding fells and valleys. The initial 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail are relatively easy, with an elevation gain of about 100 meters (328 feet).
Lanty's Tarn: About 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you’ll come across Lanty's Tarn, a small, serene lake that provides a perfect spot for a short break. The tarn is surrounded by a mix of woodland and open moor, offering a tranquil setting to enjoy a snack or simply take in the views.
Birkhouse Moor Summit: Continuing the ascent, you’ll reach the summit of Birkhouse Moor at around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark. The summit stands at 718 meters (2,356 feet) and offers panoramic views of Helvellyn, Striding Edge, and the Ullswater Valley. This is the highest point of the trail and a great place for some memorable photos.
Red Tarn: As you descend from Birkhouse Moor, you’ll pass by Red Tarn, a glacial lake nestled between the peaks of Helvellyn and Catstycam. The tarn is approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) into the hike and sits at an elevation of 718 meters (2,356 feet). It’s a popular spot for wild swimming, though the water can be quite cold even in summer.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. In the woodlands, you might spot red squirrels, a species that has become increasingly rare in the UK. The open moorlands are home to a variety of bird species, including skylarks and meadow pipits. Keep an eye out for the distinctive Herdwick sheep, a breed native to the Lake District.
The Lake District has a rich history, and this trail is no exception. The area around Glenridding was once a hub for lead mining, and remnants of this industrial past can still be seen along the trail. The village itself has historical significance, with its roots dating back to the Viking era. The name "Glenridding" is derived from Old Norse, meaning "valley of the rough stream."
Given the moderate difficulty of the trail, it’s advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. Weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes. Carry a map, compass, and sufficient water and snacks. Proper hiking boots are essential due to the uneven and sometimes boggy terrain.
The final stretch of the trail descends back into Glenridding, offering a gentle walk through rolling fields and pastures. The entire loop takes around 4-5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make along the way. Once back in Glenridding, you can enjoy a well-deserved meal at one of the local pubs or cafes, reflecting on the stunning landscapes you’ve just explored.
