Alcock Tarn, Heron Pike and Nab Scar Loop

Starting near the charming village of Grasmere in Westmorland and Furness, England, the Alcock Tarn, Heron Pike, and Nab Scar Loop is an 8 km (5-mile) trail with an elevation gain of approximately 700 meters (2,300 feet). This loop trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Grasmere, where parking is available at the village center. If you prefer public transport, buses from Keswick and Ambleside frequently stop in Grasmere, making it easily accessible.

Initial Ascent to Alcock Tarn

The trail begins with a steady climb from Grasmere, heading towards Alcock Tarn. This section is about 2 km (1.2 miles) long and gains around 300 meters (1,000 feet) in elevation. The path is well-marked and offers stunning views of Grasmere Lake and the surrounding fells. Alcock Tarn itself is a serene spot, perfect for a short break. Climbing Heron Pike

Ridge Walk to Nab Scar

The trail then follows a ridge line towards Nab Scar, a distance of about 2 km (1.2 miles). This part of the hike is less strenuous, with gentle undulations and breathtaking views on either side. Descent Back to Grasmere

The descent from Nab Scar back to Grasmere is around 2.5 km (1.5 miles) and can be quite steep in places, so take care, especially in wet conditions. The path winds through lush woodlands and open fields, eventually leading you back to the village. Along the way, you might spot local wildlife such as red squirrels and various bird species.
