Trail Overview

The trail begins in the heart of Washington Village, a quaint settlement with roots dating back to the Domesday Book. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the serene beauty of the South Downs National Park. The initial section of the trail is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the hike while enjoying views of rolling hills and open fields.

Key Landmarks and Sections

Chanctonbury Ring

Around 5 km (3 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the Chanctonbury Ring, an ancient hill fort with a history that spans back to the Iron Age. The site is also known for its distinctive ring of beech trees, planted in the 18th century. The elevation gain here is noticeable, but the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Isle of Wight to the southwest and the London skyline to the north.

South Downs Way

Continuing along the trail, you'll join a section of the South Downs Way, a long-distance footpath that stretches for 160 km (100 miles) across southern England. This part of the hike offers a mix of gentle ascents and descents, with the landscape alternating between open chalk grassland and shaded woodlands. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species.

Storrington

At approximately the halfway point, you'll pass near the village of Storrington. This is a great spot to take a break, perhaps enjoying a picnic or visiting one of the local cafes or pubs. Storrington has a rich history, with several buildings dating back to the medieval period. If time allows, a short detour to the Storrington Priory, a former Augustinian priory, is highly recommended.

Navigation and Safety

Given the varied terrain and historical landmarks, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is generally well-marked, but having a digital map can help you navigate any less obvious sections. Wear sturdy hiking boots, as some parts of the trail can be muddy, especially after rain. Bring plenty of water and snacks, and be prepared for changing weather conditions, typical of the English countryside.

Final Stretch

The final section of the trail loops back towards Washington Village, descending gently through more open fields and pastures. As you approach the village, you'll pass by several traditional Sussex flint cottages and may even catch a glimpse of the local cricket ground, a quintessentially English sight.

This hike offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and physical challenge, making it a must-do for anyone exploring the South Downs.
