“Discover West Sussex's scenic and historic Spit and East End Loop, a 5 km coastal haven.”
Starting near West Sussex, England, the Spit and East End Loop is a delightful 5 km (3.1 miles) loop trail with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for a wide range of hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the picturesque village of West Wittering, which is easily accessible by both car and public transport. If you're driving, you can park at the West Wittering Beach car park. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Chichester, from where you can catch a bus to West Wittering.
The trail begins at the West Wittering Beach car park, a popular spot known for its expansive sandy beaches and stunning coastal views. As you set off, you'll be greeted by the sight of Chichester Harbour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The trail meanders along the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the harbour and the Isle of Wight in the distance.
Approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll find yourself walking along the edge of Chichester Harbour. This tidal estuary is a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as oystercatchers, curlews, and little egrets frequently spotted. The harbour is also historically significant, having been a vital maritime hub since Roman times.
Continuing along the trail, you'll reach East Head around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark. This natural sand dune spit is one of the most dynamic and ecologically important areas in the region. It's a great spot to take a break, enjoy a picnic, and soak in the panoramic views. The area is managed by the National Trust, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
The Spit and East End Loop is rich in biodiversity. As you walk, you'll encounter a variety of coastal plants such as sea lavender, thrift, and marram grass. The salt marshes and mudflats are teeming with life, providing crucial habitats for numerous bird species and marine life. Keep an eye out for seals basking on the sandbanks during low tide.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy, but be prepared for some uneven sections, especially around the dunes. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring plenty of water, as there are limited facilities along the route.
The area around West Wittering and Chichester Harbour has a rich history.
