To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of West Hoathly, where you can find parking near the village center. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is East Grinstead. From there, you can take a local bus or taxi to West Hoathly, which is approximately 6 miles (9.6 km) away.
For navigation, it's recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
Starting from the trailhead, you'll soon enter Selsfield Common, a beautiful area of heathland and woodland. This section is relatively flat and offers a gentle introduction to the hike. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer and various bird species.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll come across the ruins of St. Margaret's Church, a site with historical significance dating back to the medieval period. This is a great spot to take a break and explore the remnants of the church and its surrounding graveyard.
As you continue, the trail will lead you into the fringes of Ashdown Forest, famous for being the inspiration for A.A. Milne's "Winnie-the-Pooh." This section involves a moderate climb, contributing to the overall elevation gain. The forest is rich in flora and fauna, and you might spot some of the animals that inspired the beloved characters.
At approximately 10 km (6.2 miles), you'll reach a high point offering panoramic views of the South Downs and the Weald. This is one of the most rewarding parts of the hike, where you can pause to take in the stunning scenery.
The trail is abundant with diverse plant life, including ancient oak trees, beech, and birch. In spring and summer, the path is lined with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to your hike. The last 7 km (4.3 miles) of the trail will take you through more open fields and small woodlands, gradually descending back towards West Hoathly. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful countryside as you make your way back to the starting point.
