“Explore history, wildlife, and stunning views on the moderate 8 km Cissbury Ring Loop in Findon.”
Starting near the charming village of Findon in West Sussex, England, the National Trust - Cissbury Ring Loop is an 8 km (approximately 5 miles) loop trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This trail is perfect for those looking to explore a mix of historical landmarks, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Findon, where parking is available near the village. If you prefer public transport, take a train to Worthing Station and then a bus to Findon. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village, making it easily accessible.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through open fields and woodlands, gradually leading you towards the ancient hill fort of Cissbury Ring. This initial section is relatively easy, allowing you to warm up before the more challenging parts of the hike.
Cissbury Ring is one of the largest hill forts in England, dating back to the Iron Age around 2,500 years ago. As you approach the ring, you'll notice the impressive earthworks that once served as defensive structures. The site also has Neolithic flint mines, some of the oldest in Britain, adding another layer of historical intrigue.
As you hike, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area. The chalk grassland is home to a variety of butterfly species, including the Adonis blue and the chalkhill blue. Birdwatchers will also enjoy spotting skylarks, kestrels, and even the occasional peregrine falcon. The flora is equally captivating, with wildflowers like cowslips and orchids dotting the landscape.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, offering detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course.
After exploring Cissbury Ring, the trail descends gently back towards Findon. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene countryside and perhaps spot some grazing sheep or deer. The loop brings you back to the starting point, completing a rewarding and enriching hike.
Whether you're a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a scenic walk, the National Trust - Cissbury Ring Loop offers something for everyone.
