Starting near the charming village of West Sussex, England, the Monarch's Way and Thunersbarrow Hill Loop is a delightful 9 km (5.6 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the village of West Sussex, where parking is available near the starting point. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Pulborough, which is well-connected to London and other major cities. From Pulborough, you can take a local bus or taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins near the village, leading you through a mix of open fields, dense woodlands, and rolling hills. The initial section is relatively flat, allowing you to warm up before the ascent begins. As you progress, you'll encounter a gradual incline that takes you up to Thunersbarrow Hill.
At approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Thunersbarrow Hill. This spot offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making it an excellent place for a short break. The hill itself is steeped in history, with ancient earthworks and burial mounds that date back to the Bronze Age. Keep an eye out for interpretive signs that provide more information about the historical significance of the area.
Continuing along the trail, you'll join a section of the Monarch's Way, a long-distance footpath that traces the escape route of King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. This part of the trail is particularly scenic, winding through lush woodlands and past picturesque streams. The path is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. In the woodlands, you might spot deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers and owls. The fields and meadows are home to wildflowers, butterflies, and bees, especially vibrant in the spring and summer months.
As you near the end of the loop, the trail descends gently back towards the village. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the final views and reflect on the journey. The last kilometer (0.6 miles) takes you through a charming rural landscape, dotted with traditional English cottages and farms.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
