To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Houghton, which is easily accessible from the A29. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Amberley, located about 3 miles (4.8 km) from the trailhead. From Amberley, you can take a taxi or a local bus to Houghton.

The trail begins near Houghton and quickly immerses you in the serene beauty of Houghton Forest. As you ascend, you'll encounter a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, offering a rich tapestry of colors, especially in autumn. The first significant climb is about 3 km (1.9 miles) in, where you'll gain approximately 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll come across the remnants of ancient earthworks, believed to date back to the Iron Age. These historical features provide a fascinating glimpse into the region's past.
As you continue, keep an eye out for local wildlife. Deer are commonly spotted in the forest, and birdwatchers will delight in the variety of species, including woodpeckers and owls. The forest floor is often carpeted with wildflowers in spring, adding vibrant splashes of color to your hike.
