The initial part of the trail takes you up the Fulking Escarpment. This section is steep but offers rewarding views of the surrounding countryside. As you ascend, you'll gain approximately 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over the first 2 km (1.2 miles). The chalky path can be slippery when wet, so good hiking boots are recommended.
Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll reach Devil's Dyke, a deep V-shaped valley with a fascinating history. Legend has it that the Devil created the dyke to flood the surrounding churches. Today, it's a popular spot for paragliding and offers panoramic views of the Weald and the English Channel on clear days. There are also information boards detailing the geological and historical significance of the area.
Continuing along the South Downs Way, you'll traverse open fields and woodlands. This section is relatively flat and allows you to catch your breath while enjoying the serene landscape. Keep an eye out for skylarks and other bird species that are common in this area. The trail here is well-maintained and easy to follow.
At approximately 8 km (5 miles), you'll reach Perching Hill, another high point offering stunning views. This is a great spot for a picnic. The elevation gain here is moderate, adding another 50 meters (164 feet) to your total ascent. The area is rich in wildflowers during the spring and summer months, making it a picturesque stop.
The South Downs are home to a variety of wildlife. You might spot rabbits, deer, and a range of bird species. The chalk grassland supports unique plant species like the round-headed rampion, also known as the "Pride of Sussex."
The South Downs Way is an ancient trail with roots dating back to the Neolithic period. Along the route, you'll find remnants of ancient settlements and burial mounds. The area around Fulking has a rich history, with evidence of Roman and Saxon activity. The Shepherd and Dog pub itself has been a local landmark for centuries, offering a glimpse into the region's past.
The last 3 km (1.8 miles) of the trail loop back towards Fulking, descending gently through open fields and pastures. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the final leg of your hike at a leisurely pace. As you approach the village, you'll pass by traditional Sussex flint cottages and well-tended gardens.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
