Cissbury Ring

One of the most significant landmarks on this trail is the Cissbury Ring, located approximately 5 km (3 miles) into the hike. This Iron Age hill fort is one of the largest in England and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The site is steeped in history, dating back to around 400 BC, and has been used for various purposes over the centuries, including as a defensive stronghold and a site for flint mining.

Nepcote Green

Around the halfway mark, you'll come across Nepcote Green, a charming open space that hosts the annual Findon Sheep Fair. This area is perfect for a short rest and a picnic. The green is surrounded by traditional English cottages, adding to the quaint atmosphere.

Navigation and Terrain

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain varies from flat sections to more challenging inclines, particularly as you approach the Cissbury Ring. Good hiking boots are recommended due to the mixed terrain, which can be muddy in places, especially after rain.

Flora and Fauna

The South Downs National Park is home to a diverse range of plant and animal life. During your hike, you'll encounter ancient woodlands filled with oak, ash, and beech trees. In the spring and summer months, the meadows are adorned with wildflowers, including orchids and bluebells. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting species such as skylarks, kestrels, and buzzards.

Final Stretch

As you make your way back towards Findon, the trail takes you through more open fields and gentle slopes. The final stretch offers a peaceful descent back into the village, where you can explore local pubs and cafes to relax and refuel after your hike.

This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and a moderate challenge, making it an excellent choice for hikers looking to explore the South Downs.
