Around the 8 km (5 miles) mark, you'll enter Chalkpit Wood, a serene woodland area known for its diverse flora and fauna. This section of the trail is relatively flat, providing a nice contrast to the earlier elevation gain. Keep an eye out for various bird species and small mammals that inhabit the woods.

Nature and Wildlife

The trail traverses through a mix of open grasslands, woodlands, and chalk downlands. In the spring and summer months, the grasslands are adorned with wildflowers, including orchids and cowslips. The chalk downlands are home to butterflies like the Adonis Blue and Chalkhill Blue. Deer and foxes are also commonly spotted along the trail.

These mines were used for thousands of years, and you can still see the remnants of these ancient workings. The area around Cissbury Ring has been inhabited since prehistoric times, adding a rich historical layer to your hike.
