“Explore a scenic 15 km trail from Billingshurst to Pulborough, rich in history and natural beauty.”
Starting near the charming village of Billingshurst in West Sussex, England, this 15 km (approximately 9.3 miles) point-to-point trail offers a delightful mix of countryside scenery, historical landmarks, and gentle elevation changes. With an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), the trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it accessible for most hikers with a moderate level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can take a train to Billingshurst Station, which is well-connected via the Southern Railway network. If you're driving, there are parking facilities available near the station and in the village itself. From London, it's about a 1.5-hour drive via the A24 and A272.
The trail begins in Billingshurst, a village known for its historical architecture and quaint atmosphere. As you set off, you'll pass through a mix of open fields and wooded areas, offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more undulating terrain ahead.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. In the spring and summer months, you'll find wildflowers such as bluebells and primroses carpeting the woodland floors. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The mixed deciduous forests provide a habitat for many small mammals and insects, making it a lively environment to explore.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The path is generally well-marked, but there are sections where it can be easy to lose your way, especially in dense woodland areas. Always carry a map and a fully charged phone.
As you approach Pulborough, the trail begins to descend gently. The final 2 km (1.2 miles) offer stunning views of the South Downs in the distance. Pulborough itself is a historic village with several amenities, including pubs and cafes where you can relax and refuel after your hike.
Pulborough has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The village was an important crossing point over the River Arun and has several historical buildings, including the 12th-century St. Mary's Church. The Pulborough Brooks, a nearby RSPB reserve, is also worth a visit for birdwatching enthusiasts.
The trail concludes near Pulborough Station, making it convenient to catch a train back to Billingshurst or onward to other destinations. If you're driving, there are parking facilities available in Pulborough village.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for a day hike in the West Sussex countryside.
