Trail Overview

The trail begins in Streatley, a quaint village nestled along the River Thames. As you set off, you'll follow the riverbank, offering serene views of the water and the surrounding greenery. The first few kilometers are relatively flat, making for a gentle start to your hike.

River Thames and Wildlife

Around 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter some of the most scenic sections along the River Thames. Keep an eye out for swans, ducks, and other waterfowl that frequent this area. The riverbanks are also home to various plant species, including willow trees and wildflowers, which add to the trail's natural charm.

Elevation Gain and Woodlands

As you move away from the river, the trail begins to ascend gradually. By the time you reach the 10 km (6.2 miles) mark, you'll have gained a significant portion of the 300 meters (984 feet) of elevation. This section takes you through lush woodlands, where you might spot deer and other woodland creatures. The canopy of trees provides ample shade, making it a pleasant stretch even on warmer days.

Historical Landmarks

Around the 15 km (9.3 miles) point, you'll come across the village of Blewbury. This village is steeped in history, with its roots tracing back to the Saxon era. Notable landmarks include the 12th-century St. Michael's Church and several well-preserved thatched cottages. Take a moment to explore the village and perhaps enjoy a break at one of the local pubs.

Return to Streatley

The final leg of the hike takes you back towards Streatley, completing the loop. This section is a mix of open fields and minor roads, offering a different but equally charming perspective of the English countryside. As you approach the end of the trail, you'll descend gradually, easing the strain on your legs after the earlier climbs.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's length and varied terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be invaluable, especially in the more remote sections. Ensure you carry enough water, snacks, and a basic first-aid kit. Weather in this region can be unpredictable, so pack a waterproof jacket and wear sturdy hiking boots.
