The walk starts on Newport Canal, at the Water Lane Car Park, opposite the Swan Inn. Should this car park be full, further car parking is available further along Water Lane at Victoria Park, as well as elsewhere in the town. With the car park behind you and the canal in front , cross the canal and turn left to pass under the bridge. Once under the bridge, follow the footpath adjacent to the Canal. This will take you under a footbridge immediately after the Toll House, ‘Tickethouse Lock’ and through to the end of the canal after approximately a kilometre. At the end of the canal, continue forwards across a small bridge and kissing gate into the field. The footpath here continues between two fences, turning at almost 90 degrees and heading towards the farmhouse. Once through the next kissing gate adjacent to the farmhouse, turn left and follow the farm track for 200m to another kissing gate at the next path junction. At the Junction turn right and head slightly up hill towards the housing. After 100m, look for the kissing gate on the field boundary on your left. Take this gate and continue diagonally across the field, towards a telegraph pole, heading for the housing at the opposite corner of the field. As you cross the field, you will meet a fence which you will cross through a kissing gate. At the corner of the housing, again pass through a kissing gate. There is a small bend, left then right , then proceed onto and follow Connors Lane. When at the end of Connors Lane, take care crossing High Street onto the pavement on the opposite side and turn left. Take care crossing the junctions of Turners Lane and School Road, continuing along High Street until you reach St Peter’s Church. Enter the Church grounds on the right up the tarmac drive and though the double gates, then follow the path to the rear of the Church where it meets Pipers Lane. At Pipers Lane, take a left and follow the lane. Shortly after this, the lane takes a sharp right hand turn, take this and continue along the lane. As the lane gets to the end of the residential development, it narrows to a footpath as fields open on both sides. Continue along the footpath until it passes through the former sandstone quarry to a T junction. At the Junction turn right and follow the farm track for approximately 75m until the next footpath on the right. Turn right , again follow the footpath between the hedges. Follow this path as it bears slightly to the right, continue until it meets the road. Cross the road and continue straight ahead and follow Stackyard Lane, past ‘The Lodge’ on the right hand side. As the road bears to the right, at the junction with Longwithy Lane, turn right and continue along Stackyard Lane until it meets Pipers Lane again. At this point take the footpath on the left between the houses, opposite Pipers Lane. Follow the footpath between the properties, and continue as it crosses between the fields, passing through two kissing gates and onto the playfields. Follow the path to the right, around the playing field, passing a children’s playground and a pavilion, to the car park, then through the car park to Shrewsbury Road. Within the village of Edgmond, there are two pubs at either end of Shrewsbury Road, the Lamb Inn 200m to the left and the Lion 200m to the right (on the route). The route continues by turning right out of the car park, passing Edgmond Village Hall on the left, towards the Lion. When the route meets High Street, adjacent to the Lion Public House, cross the road and continue ahead along Newport Road, with the Lion on your left. At the junction with Robin Lane, bear left and continue along Newport Road. The route follows Newport Road for 1.25 Km until it meets Cheney Hill. Turn right here and take care to ensure you keep to the pavement as traffic can be fast moving here. After 150m, towards the bottom of the hill, look for the stile on the right crossing into the open space. The open space has an oval path which goes around the edge. Follow the oval path to the right to the opposite corner and to another stile. Cross this stile and follow the footpath as it passes through the horse paddocks. Pass over three stiles ahead and finally another stile to the right of a metal gate onto Green Lane. Follow Green Lane until it meets Chetwynd End. Turn right and continue along Chetwynd End as it passes the Bridge Inn and returns to meet the canal and the start of the walk.
