“Hike The Midhurst Way: scenic Surrey trails, historical sites, and diverse terrain for an enriching 14km journey.”
Embarking on The Midhurst Way from Haslemere Station to Midhurst, hikers will traverse approximately 14 kilometers (about 8.7 miles) through the picturesque countryside of Surrey, England. With an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet), the trail offers a medium difficulty level, suitable for those with some hiking experience and a reasonable level of fitness.
Starting at Haslemere Station, which is easily accessible by train from London and other major cities, the trailhead is just a short walk from the station itself. For those arriving by car, parking is available in the town, with the station area serving as a convenient starting point.
Navigating the Trail
As you set out, the path takes you through a mix of woodland and open heathland, typical of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The initial section is relatively flat, allowing hikers to warm up before encountering the gentle inclines that characterize the route. Using HiiKER for navigation will help in keeping on track, as the trail is well-marked but can be confusing at certain junctions.
Historical Landmarks and Surrounding Nature
The Midhurst Way offers not only natural beauty but also a journey through history. The trail passes close to the ruins of Cowdray House, a Tudor manor house that suffered a catastrophic fire in the 18th century. This historical site, about halfway through the hike, is a perfect spot to rest and imagine the grandeur of the past.
The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, with opportunities to spot deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The mixed woodlands are home to ancient trees, and the heathland blooms with heather and gorse, particularly vibrant in late summer.
Challenges and Terrain
The terrain varies, with some sections that can become muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. The trail includes a few short, steep sections that contribute to the overall elevation gain, providing a moderate workout.
Approaching Midhurst
As you approach Midhurst, the trail becomes more defined, leading into this charming market town. The final descent into Midhurst offers expansive views of the South Downs, and the town itself is a delightful place to explore, with its historic buildings and local shops.
Conclusion of the Hike
Upon reaching Midhurst, hikers can enjoy the amenities of the town, including cafes and pubs for a well-deserved meal. For the return journey, public buses are available to take you back to Haslemere Station or onward to other destinations.
Remember to check the weather forecast before setting out, carry sufficient water and snacks, and leave no trace to preserve the beauty of the trail for future hikers.
