Starting near Surrey, England, the Silver Wood and River Wey via Pilgrim's Way trail spans approximately 13 kilometers (around 8 miles) with an elevation gain of about 200 meters (656 feet). This point-to-point trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address: Guildford, Surrey. For those using public transport, Guildford is well-connected by train from London and other major cities. From Guildford station, local buses or a short taxi ride can take you to the trailhead.
The trail begins near Guildford, a historic town with roots dating back to Saxon times. As you start your hike, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the lush greenery of Silver Wood. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.
Silver Wood is a serene forest area, home to a variety of wildlife including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. The dense canopy provides ample shade, making it a pleasant walk even on warmer days. Keep an eye out for ancient oak and beech trees, some of which are centuries old.
As you exit Silver Wood, you'll join the historic Pilgrim's Way. This ancient route has been used by pilgrims for centuries, traveling to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury. The path here is well-trodden and offers a mix of dirt trails and gravel paths. Historical markers along the way provide insights into the significance of this route.
Around the halfway mark, approximately 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) in, you'll encounter the River Wey. This picturesque river is a haven for wildlife, including kingfishers and otters. The trail runs parallel to the river for a stretch, offering stunning views and a peaceful ambiance. There are several spots where you can take a break and enjoy the scenery.
The trail's elevation gain is gradual but noticeable, particularly as you approach the 8-kilometer (5-mile) mark. Here, the path ascends through rolling hills, offering panoramic views of the Surrey countryside. The climb is steady but manageable, with the highest point providing a rewarding vista.
Given the trail's historical and natural significance, it's well-marked, but it's always wise to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is recommended for its detailed maps and real-time updates. Ensure you have adequate water, snacks, and appropriate footwear, as some sections can be muddy, especially after rain.
The final part of the trail descends gently towards the endpoint, where you'll find yourself near the village of Farnham. Farnham is another historic location, known for its Georgian architecture and the impressive Farnham Castle. This makes for a fitting end to a hike rich in both natural beauty and historical significance.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a diverse range of flora and fauna. Spring and summer bring wildflowers in abundance, while autumn offers a spectacular display of changing leaves. Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy the variety of species that inhabit the area.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
