“This 9 km loop in Surrey blends natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate challenge for hikers.”
Starting near Surrey, England, this 9 km (approximately 5.6 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue. With an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), it is rated as a medium difficulty hike, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Outwood Common Country Park, which is well-signposted and has a parking area. For public transport, take a train to Redhill Station, and from there, a local bus or taxi can take you to the park entrance.
The trail begins at Outwood Common Country Park, a serene area known for its lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by a variety of native trees, including oak, beech, and birch. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more undulating sections ahead.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the historic Outwood Windmill, one of the oldest working windmills in England, dating back to 1665. This is a great spot to take a break and soak in some local history. The windmill is often open to the public on weekends, so you might even get a chance to see it in action.
Continuing on, the trail leads you into Bransland Wood, a dense woodland area that offers a stark contrast to the open spaces of Outwood Common. Here, the trail becomes more challenging with a few gentle inclines and declines. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The woodland is particularly beautiful in the spring when bluebells carpet the forest floor.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course.
As you exit Bransland Wood, the trail loops back towards Outwood Common. This section is relatively easy, with gentle slopes and well-trodden paths. You'll pass through a few open fields, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This is a great opportunity to take some photos and enjoy the peaceful rural landscape.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
