Starting your adventure near Surrey, England, the Norbury Park Short Loop is a delightful 4 km (approximately 2.5 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Norbury Park, near Mickleham, Surrey. For those opting for public transport, the nearest train station is Box Hill & Westhumble, which is about 2 miles (3.2 km) from the trailhead. From the station, you can either walk or take a local taxi to reach the starting point.

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a mixed woodland area, where you’ll be greeted by the sight of ancient oak and beech trees. This initial section is relatively easy, allowing you to warm up as you gradually gain elevation.
At approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you’ll come across the Norbury Park House, a historical landmark dating back to the 18th century. Although the house itself is private property, the surrounding gardens and parkland are open to the public and offer a picturesque setting for a short break.
Continuing along the trail, you’ll reach the highest point at around 2 km (1.2 miles), where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This spot is perfect for taking photos and soaking in the natural beauty of the region.
As you descend, the trail meanders through a variety of habitats, including open meadows and dense woodlands. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. In spring and summer, the meadows are often adorned with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to your hike.
Norbury Park has a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Iron Age. The park was once part of a larger estate owned by the More-Molyneux family, who played a significant role in the local history of Surrey. The remnants of old farm buildings and ancient boundary markers can still be seen along the trail, offering a glimpse into the past.
The final section of the loop takes you through a serene woodland path, gradually descending back to the starting point. This part of the trail is relatively easy, allowing you to cool down as you complete your hike.
