Starting near the charming village of Lingfield in Surrey, England, the Lingfield to Haxted Loop is a delightful 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) trail that offers a mix of serene countryside, historical landmarks, and picturesque landscapes. With no significant elevation gain, this loop is accessible to a wide range of hikers, though it is rated as medium difficulty due to its length and varied terrain.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, you can park near the Lingfield Train Station, which is conveniently located close to the start of the trail. For those using public transport, Lingfield Train Station is well-connected, with regular services from London Victoria and East Croydon. From the station, it's a short walk to the beginning of the loop.

Starting from Lingfield, you'll immediately notice the village's historical charm. Lingfield is home to several medieval buildings, including the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, which dates back to the 14th century. Take a moment to admire the architecture and perhaps grab a coffee from one of the local cafes before you set off.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll pass through the Lingfield Nature Reserve. This area is a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as kingfishers and herons frequently spotted. The reserve also features a variety of flora, including ancient oak trees and seasonal wildflowers.
At approximately the halfway point, around 5.5 km (3.4 miles) into the loop, you'll reach Haxted Mill. This historic watermill, dating back to the 14th century, is one of the oldest in the country. Although it no longer operates as a mill, the building has been beautifully preserved and now houses a museum and a restaurant. It's an excellent spot to take a break and enjoy some refreshments while soaking in the historical ambiance.
As you continue, the trail meanders through open fields and farmland. This section offers expansive views of the Surrey countryside, with gently rolling hills and patchwork fields. Depending on the season, you might see fields of blooming rapeseed or grazing livestock. This part of the trail is relatively flat, making for a leisurely walk.
Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for local wildlife. In addition to the birds in the nature reserve, you might encounter deer, foxes, and a variety of small mammals. The trail also passes by several ponds and streams, which are home to frogs, newts, and other aquatic creatures.
