“Explore the scenic 9 km Boxwood and St Martha's Hill Loop in Surrey, rich in history and natural beauty.”
Starting near the charming village of Chilworth in Surrey, England, the Boxwood and St Martha's Hill Loop via Pilgrim's Way is a delightful 9 km (approximately 5.6 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can take a train to Chilworth Station, which is well-connected to London and other major cities. From the station, it's a short walk to the starting point of the trail. If you're driving, you can park near the village of Chilworth, where there are several parking options available.
The trail begins near Chilworth and quickly immerses you in the serene beauty of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). As you start your hike, you'll follow the historic Pilgrim's Way, an ancient route that has been used for centuries by pilgrims traveling to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral.
The first significant section of the trail takes you through Boxwood, a dense woodland area known for its lush greenery and diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The trail here is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
As you continue, you'll ascend St Martha's Hill, which stands at 175 meters (574 feet) above sea level. The climb is gradual but steady, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside as you reach the summit. At the top, you'll find St Martha's Church, a historic landmark dating back to the 12th century. The church is a popular spot for both hikers and history enthusiasts, providing a peaceful place to rest and take in the views.
Descending from St Martha's Hill, you'll rejoin the Pilgrim's Way. This section of the trail is relatively flat and easy-going, allowing you to enjoy the scenic landscapes without too much effort. The path meanders through open fields and pastures, offering glimpses of traditional English countryside life.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a variety of plant species, including ancient oak trees, beech, and, of course, boxwood. The area is also home to numerous wildflowers, especially in the spring and summer months. Wildlife is abundant, so keep your eyes peeled for rabbits, squirrels, and a variety of birdlife, including woodpeckers and owls.
The Pilgrim's Way is steeped in history, having been a major route for pilgrims since medieval times. St Martha's Church itself is a testament to the area's rich historical tapestry, offering insights into the religious and cultural heritage of the region.
As you near the end of the loop, the trail gently descends back towards Chilworth. This final section is a pleasant walk through more open countryside, eventually bringing you back to where you started.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for a day hike in the Surrey Hills.
