To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address: The White Hart Pub, Pirbright, Woking GU24 0LP, which is a short distance from the trailhead. From the station, you can either walk or take a local taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins near the charming village of Pirbright, offering a mix of woodland paths, open fields, and gentle hills. As you start, you'll be greeted by the lush greenery of Big Copse, a dense woodland area that provides ample shade and a serene atmosphere. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the more undulating sections ahead.
Around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark, you'll come across a picturesque pond, often frequented by local wildlife such as ducks and herons. This is a great spot for a short break and some bird-watching. Continuing on, the trail gradually ascends, offering glimpses of the surrounding countryside through breaks in the trees.
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), you'll enter Ten Acre Wood, a historically significant area known for its ancient oak trees. Some of these trees are believed to be over 300 years old, adding a sense of timelessness to your hike. The woodland is also home to various species of birds, including woodpeckers and owls, so keep your eyes and ears open.
The region around Pirbright has a rich history, with roots dating back to the medieval period. The nearby village of Pirbright is home to St. Michael and All Angels Church, which dates back to the 12th century. While not directly on the trail, it's worth a visit if you have time before or after your hike.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The terrain can be muddy, especially after rain, so waterproof hiking boots are recommended. Additionally, bring plenty of water and some snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.
As you loop back towards the starting point, the trail descends gently, offering a relaxing end to your hike. You'll pass through more open fields, where you might spot grazing sheep or cows, adding a pastoral charm to your journey. The final kilometer brings you back into Big Copse, completing the loop and returning you to the trailhead near Pirbright.
This trail offers a wonderful mix of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
