To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, you can park near the Norbury Park Sawmill, which is a convenient starting point. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Leatherhead, from where you can take a local bus or taxi to Norbury Park.
The trail begins at Norbury Park, a historic estate with roots dating back to the 18th century. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by the lush greenery of Beechy Wood. This section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a gentle introduction to the hike. Keep an eye out for ancient beech trees, some of which are over a century old.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll start to ascend gently towards Norbury Park. The elevation gain here is gradual, allowing you to enjoy the surroundings without too much strain. Norbury Park itself is a site of historical significance, with remnants of old buildings and structures that date back to the 18th century. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including deer and numerous bird species.
Continuing on, you'll head towards Updown Wood, which is approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike. This section involves a more noticeable elevation gain, but the effort is well worth it. Updown Wood offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, especially during the autumn months when the foliage turns a vibrant mix of reds and oranges. The wood is also a great spot for birdwatching, so bring your binoculars if you're a keen ornithologist.
The final stretch of the trail takes you back towards Norbury Park, completing the loop. This section is mostly downhill, allowing for a leisurely end to your hike. As you descend, you'll pass through a mix of open fields and wooded areas, offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy. The trail ends back at the Norbury Park Sawmill, where you can rest and reflect on your journey.
