Getting There

Pin Mill to Chelmondiston

Starting from the Butt and Oyster pub, the trail initially follows the banks of the River Orwell. This section is relatively flat and offers stunning views of the river, with opportunities to spot various waterfowl such as swans, ducks, and herons. After about 1.5 km (0.9 miles), the trail veers inland towards the village of Chelmondiston. Here, you will encounter gentle inclines as you walk through charming countryside dotted with traditional Suffolk cottages.

Woodland and Open Fields

Continuing from Chelmondiston, the trail enters a woodland area known as Spring Wood. This section is particularly beautiful in the spring when bluebells carpet the forest floor. The path here can be narrow and uneven, so watch your footing. After approximately 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail emerges into open fields, offering expansive views of the surrounding countryside. This is a good spot to take a break and enjoy a picnic.

Historical Significance

As you walk, you will pass several points of historical interest. The River Orwell itself has a rich maritime history, having been a significant trade route since Roman times.
