Trail Highlights

Flora and Fauna

Bradfield Woods is renowned for its biodiversity. In spring and summer, the forest floor is carpeted with bluebells, wood anemones, and other wildflowers. Keep an eye out for the rare oxlip, a flower that thrives in this unique environment. The woods are also home to a variety of bird species, including nightingales, woodpeckers, and tawny owls. If you're lucky, you might spot a roe deer or a fox darting through the underbrush.

Historical Significance

The history of Bradfield Woods is deeply intertwined with the local community. The practice of coppicing has not only preserved the woodland but also supported local industries for centuries. The wood harvested from these trees was traditionally used for making hurdles, thatching spars, and other essential items. As you walk, you'll notice the distinct structure of the coppiced trees, with multiple stems growing from a single base, a testament to this ancient practice.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time location tracking. The terrain is relatively flat, but the path can be muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy walking boots are recommended. There are no significant elevation changes, making it a comfortable walk for most hikers.
