Trail Overview

The trail begins at the Preston Park Museum and Grounds, a site rich in history and culture. As you start your hike, you'll pass through well-maintained paths that meander through lush greenery and open fields. The initial section of the trail is relatively flat and easy, making it a good warm-up for the rest of the hike.

Historical Significance

Preston Park itself is steeped in history, dating back to the 19th century. The museum within the park offers a glimpse into the local heritage, including Victorian-era exhibits and a recreated Victorian street. As you walk through the park, you'll notice the beautifully preserved gardens and the River Tees flowing nearby, which has historically been a vital waterway for the region.

Nature and Wildlife

As you continue along the loop, you'll enter a more wooded area where the trail narrows slightly. This section is particularly enchanting in the spring and summer months when the trees are in full leaf and the underbrush is teeming with wildlife. Keep an eye out for local bird species such as robins, blackbirds, and occasionally, the elusive kingfisher near the riverbanks.

Key Landmarks

About halfway through the loop, you'll come across the Butterfly World, a tropical environment housing a variety of butterfly species. This is a great spot to take a short break and enjoy the vibrant colors and delicate beauty of the butterflies. Just a little further along, you'll find the Walled Garden, another excellent place to pause and take in the meticulously maintained flower beds and ornamental plants.

Navigation and Safety

Although the trail is rated as medium difficulty, it's important to wear appropriate footwear, especially after rain when the path can become muddy and slippery.
