The trail begins at Wetton Mill, a picturesque spot by the River Manifold. As you start your hike, you'll follow the river for a short distance before ascending towards Thor's Cave. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up before the more challenging sections.
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Thor's Cave, a natural limestone cavern perched high above the valley. The cave is accessible via a steep but manageable climb. Once inside, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the Manifold Valley. Thor's Cave has a rich history, with archaeological evidence suggesting it was inhabited during the Stone Age. Take your time to explore the cave and enjoy the panoramic vistas.
After descending from Thor's Cave, the trail continues through a mix of woodland and open fields. Informational plaques provide insights into the mining techniques and the lives of the miners who worked here.
The last 3 km (1.9 miles) of the loop take you through more open countryside, gradually descending back towards Wetton Mill. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene landscape and perhaps spot some grazing sheep or cattle.
