To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Alton Towers, Farley Ln, Alton, Stoke-on-Trent ST10 4DB, which is the nearest significant landmark. From there, it's a short drive to the trailhead. For those using public transport, take a train to Stoke-on-Trent Railway Station and then a bus to Alton Towers. From Alton Towers, you can either walk or take a short taxi ride to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through Threap Wood, where you'll be greeted by a canopy of ancient oak and beech trees. The first kilometer (0.6 miles) is relatively easy, with a gradual elevation gain of about 50 meters (164 feet). Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife, including woodpeckers and nuthatches, which are commonly seen in this area.
As you progress, you'll come across remnants of old mining activities, particularly around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark.
