To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Cannock Chase Visitor Centre, Marquis Drive, Cannock WS12 4PW, which is the nearest significant landmark. There is ample parking available at the visitor center. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Cannock, from where you can take a taxi or a local bus to the visitor center.

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through The Butts, an area known for its lush greenery and serene atmosphere. This section is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the rest of the hike. As you continue, you'll reach Old Brook, approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike. This section features a picturesque stream that meanders through the landscape. Around the 10 km (6.2 miles) mark, you'll enter the Sher Brook area. This part of the trail is known for its dense woodland and diverse flora. The elevation gain is more noticeable here, but the well-maintained path makes it manageable.
Cannock Chase, where this trail is located, has a rich history. During World War I, it served as a training ground for British and Commonwealth troops.
