The loop begins with a gentle ascent through Priest Wood, a serene woodland area known for its ancient trees and rich biodiversity. As you hike through the woods, keep an eye out for native bird species such as the European robin and the great spotted woodpecker. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) of the trail will take you through this lush forest, with an elevation gain of about 30 meters (98 feet).
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll come across the remnants of an old stone bridge, a relic from the 18th century. This bridge once served as a crucial crossing point for local farmers and traders. Take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship and imagine the historical significance of this now-quiet spot.
As you continue, the trail descends into Coxgreen Dingle, a picturesque valley with a small stream running through it. This section is particularly beautiful in the spring when wildflowers like bluebells and primroses carpet the forest floor. The descent into the dingle is about 40 meters (131 feet) over the next 2 km (1.2 miles), making it a relatively steep but manageable section.
Coxgreen Dingle is a haven for wildlife. You might spot deer grazing in the early morning or catch a glimpse of a fox darting through the underbrush. The stream is home to various aquatic creatures, including frogs and small fish. The flora is equally diverse, with oak, beech, and ash trees dominating the landscape.
The last 4 km (2.5 miles) of the trail loop back towards the starting point, gradually ascending out of the dingle and passing through open meadows and farmland. This section offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, especially rewarding during sunset. The final ascent is about 30 meters (98 feet), bringing the total elevation gain back to around 100 meters (328 feet).
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience.
Given the medium difficulty rating, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months. The trail can get muddy after rain, so waterproof gear is also recommended. Always check the weather forecast before heading out and let someone know your hiking plans.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and a moderate challenge, making it an excellent choice for a day hike in the Staffordshire region.
