Great Wood and West Hill Loop

Starting near the picturesque village of Somerset, England, the Great Wood and West Hill Loop is a delightful 9 km (approximately 5.6 miles) trail that offers a moderate challenge with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This loop trail is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and historical richness of the area.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the nearest known address, which is the village of Over Stowey, Somerset. There is a small car park available near the start of the trail. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is Bridgwater, which is well-connected by train. From Bridgwater, you can take a local bus or taxi to Over Stowey.

Trail Overview

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through the Great Wood, a dense forest area known for its towering trees and rich biodiversity. As you hike through this section, keep an eye out for various bird species, including woodpeckers and owls, which are commonly spotted here. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, adding a splash of color to your hike.

Historical Significance

About 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you will come across the remnants of an old charcoal burner’s camp. This area has historical significance dating back to the 18th century when charcoal production was a vital industry in the region. Informational plaques provide insights into the lives of the workers and the techniques they used.

West Hill Ascent

The trail then leads you to the ascent of West Hill, which is the most challenging part of the hike. The climb is steady but manageable, with an elevation gain of about 150 meters (492 feet) over 2 km (1.2 miles). As you ascend, the forest gives way to more open terrain, offering stunning views of the Quantock Hills and the Bristol Channel on clear days.

Scenic Views and Wildlife

At the summit of West Hill, take a moment to enjoy the panoramic views. This is a great spot for a break and some photography. The area is also home to wild ponies and deer, so keep your camera ready. The descent from West Hill is gradual and takes you through heathland, where you can see a variety of wildflowers and butterflies, especially in the summer months.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it’s always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. I recommend using HiiKER for accurate trail maps and real-time updates. The app can help you stay on track and provide information on any trail changes or closures.

Final Stretch

The final stretch of the loop takes you back through the Great Wood, completing the circuit. This section is relatively flat and offers a peaceful end to your hike. As you approach the trailhead, you’ll pass by a small stream, which is a lovely spot to cool off and reflect on your journey.

This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
